Alfred “Apple” Ellyson Ailsworth, 88, of Deltaville, Virginia passed away on January 3rd at the Hospice House of Williamsburg. He was a loyal and dedicated member of Cornerstone Fellowship Church. A native of Deltaville, Alfred was the son of the late Robert Dea and Lelia Ailsworth. One of eleven children, he was preceded in death by five siblings; Dr. Robert Dea Ailsworth, James Raynor Ailsworth, Evelyn Apsley, Amanda Payne, and Phyllis Ailsworth. Mr. Ailsworth is survived by his wife Mildred Ward Ailsworth, five children; Alfred (Pam) Ailsworth, Jr., Stephanie (Terry) Greenquist , Ellen Ailsworth, Millicent (Larry) Wilson and William Ailsworth; seven grandchildren Brooke Ailsworth ( Billy) Bertrand , Justin (Mandee) Ailsworth, Dylan Greenquist, Taylor (Brittany ) Greenquist , Avery Greenquist (David ) Walsh , Jack (Jane) Lord , Benjamin Wilson, two great grandsons Raylan James Bertrand and John Lord V. He is also survived by five siblings; his brother Mike Ailsworth and sisters Virginia Steinmetz, Betty Fuller, Dorothy Burroughs, Patricia Gwitt and many nieces and nephews.
Throughout his career of over 70 years, Captain “Apple” was the owner and operator of various buyboats, freight boats, tugboats and barges that operated mostly on the Chesapeake Bay and tributaries. The family wishes to thank everyone for their prayers, acts of kindness and support throughout Apple’s life and his recent illness.
Visitation will be held for family and friends at Cornerstone Fellowship Church in Mathews on January 6th at 1:00 PM followed by Funeral Services at 2:00 PM at Cornerstone. Burial services will be at Zoar Baptist Church cemetery in Deltaville followed by a reception in the fellowship hall of Zoar Baptist Church.
