Anthony R. “Bob” Tanner, a 45- year resident of Gwynn’s Island, Mathews, passed away peacefully on Sunday, February 4, 2024, at his home.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 75 years, Jean P. Tanner; daughter, Patricia Hill (Grover); sons, Anthony Tanner, Jr. (Andrea), R. Neil Tanner, and David S. Tanner (Ron Forehand); granddaughters, Kristin K. Kite (Matthew), Meara E. Kelley (Brandon Skeens) and great- grandchildren Cassidy R. Kite, and Henry Tanner Kite. A devoted Catholic, he was a parishioner and active member of Francis De Sales Church, Mathews.
Born in Wiltshire, England, in 1927, Bob was the son of Harry and Bridgit Tanner. He joined the British Royal Navy, and when his ship made an unscheduled stop in Baltimore, a blind date led to meeting the love of his life, Jean Gagliano, of Towson, Maryland. He returned to England with the promise he would come back after 18 months to marry his sweetheart. They married and he ultimately began a successful career as a representative and regional manager for McNeil Pharmaceuticals (Johnson & Johnson).
Upon retiring, Bob pursued many hobbies, including flying ultralights, reading, playing the violin, steaming crabs, traveling through Ireland, and spending time with family and friends. He and his wife Jean were instrumental in establishing the Gwynn’s Island Museum. He is remembered for his sense of humor which stayed with him to the end.
A private service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Gwynn’s Island Museum in Bob’s name. Faulkner Funeral Homes, Foster-Faulkner Chapel, Mathews is assisting the family.
