Bernard B. Martin “Sonny”, 92, of Dunnsville, Virginia, passed away peacefully, on Monday, May 30, 2022, in Petersburg, Virginia.
Sonny was a craftsman with a love for wood working, fishing, playing his guitar, and the family dog, Flash. He was in the Army and later retired working in construction having helped to build route 66 in Virginia.
Sonny was preceded in death by his father, Wiley R Martin; mother, Susie A Beverly; wife, Thelma Martin; sons, Melvin Martin, Wylie Martin; grandson, Harold Edward Coleman Jr.; granddaughter, Christina Martin; and two great-grandchildren who died at birth.
He is survived by his companion of twenty years, Elizabeth F Hummer “Betty” of Dunnsville; three sons, Bernard Martin, Victor Martin, and James Martin of Rockbridge County; four daughters, Linda Bayly, Susie Martin, Sheila Wallace, and Laura Seay of Rockbridge County; eighteen grandchildren, and nineteen great-grandchildren, and twenty-one great great grandchildren. Sonny was also preceded in death by Betty’s children, Richard Darr, Bonita Darr, and Wayne Darr. He is survived by Bettys’ children Karen Darr-Reason of Dale City, William Darr of Flemington, WV, Patricia Darr of Culpeper, and Robert Darr of Dunnsville; many grand-children and great grand-children, as well as other family and friends.
A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, July 24th, 2022, at Faulkner Funeral Homes, Marks-Bristow Chapel, Tappahannock. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the funeral home. A graveside service will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Monday, July 25th, 2022 at Culpeper National Cemetery.
