Born Betty Jean Adams and raised in the hills of West Virginia, Betty married Anthony and raised their 5 children in New Jersey, then retired to Virginia and Rappahannock Shores. She died on Saturday, December 12, 2020.
Living to the venerable age of 95 is bitter sweet. Friends and relatives from her youth have all gone on ahead. She remained strong for those of us who survived with her the losses of her husband Anthony, her son Ken, her son Dan, her granddaughter Windy, and her great granddaughter, Skylar. She outlived siblings, sons in law, nieces, nephews, cousins, and innumerable friends. She said farewell in sadness to Irene and Eddie, Chris and Marie, Helga and Roy, the closest friends of three separate eras of her life. Only sister in law Emmy remains now.
In the midst of her busy life, Betty made time to go back to school and become a nurse, which had always been her dream. She watched her children grow up and grow old. She saw her grandchildren grown and knew many great grandchildren. She loved them all with a rare intensity.
Betty made many new friends, among them Glenyss, Joanne and Andrew. She was the queen of her Red Hat group, served on a few other clubs, donated 12,000 hours of her time to Riverside Hospital and Gift Shop, delivered Meals on Wheels and boated and fished the Rappahannock River to her heart’s content.
Sue, Betty’s younger daughter, stayed with her the last few years, looking after Betty and her home. John took care of home maintenance for many years. Diane and Jim, John and Kim, and lots of grandchildren and friends visited often.
We her family, are very grateful for the friends, neighbors, and all others who made her later years comfortable. Thank you all.
