Carrie Evans Mercer, 101, of Topping, VA., and widow of Gordon. S. Mercer, passed away on Saturday, October 8, 2016 at Riverside Convalescent Center in Saluda. Born on May 31, 1915 in Mosheim, TN, she was the surviving child of the late John and Jessie Evans of Butylo, VA., In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by three sisters, Rena Williams, Ruth Worrell and Susie Abbott; five brothers, Tom, Frank, Dunc, Bob and Joe Evans and her son in law, Pete Barrett. She is survived by her daughter, Joan M. Barrett of Richmond, VA.; granddaughter, Angela Barrett Niggel and her husband Dave; two great- granddaughters, Elissa and Rebecca Niggel, of Lititz, PA, and many nieces, nephews and their families. At the time of her death, Mrs. Mercer was the oldest living member of Lower United Methodist Church, Hartfield, VA., where she taught the Primary Sunday School Class in the late 1950s and early 1960s and was an active member of the Young Adult Sunday School Class, and later the Active Adults Sunday School Class. She had also been a member of the Middlesex Woman’s Club, the United Daughters of the Confederacy and served on committees of the Southern States Corporative and Ladies Extension Service. The Mercers’ owned a chicken/egg business and Mrs. Mercer enjoyed making new friends of people who purchased eggs and vegetables while week-ending at their “Rivah” cottages. She was also known for making the best Pecan Pie on the planet and she always had several either just baked or in the freezer which could be on the table at a moment’s notice. Funeral services will be held 3p.m., Saturday, October 15th, at Bristow-Faulkner Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Saluda. Burial will follow at Harmony Grove Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Lower United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 98, 120 Lower Church Road, Hartfield, VA., 23071 or the Middlesex Volunteer Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 98, 17684 General Puller Highway, Deltaville, VA., 23043.
