MATHEWS, VA - Waldo (Wally) Scheid, 93, of Mathews, VA died Thursday, Oct 24, 2013 at Riverside Regional Medical Center. He was born January 4, 1920 to Karl Anton and Martha Knoll Scheid in Monroeville, Ohio. After graduating high school in 1937 he earned a Bachelors of Science in Agriculture from The Ohio State University in 1942. He received his commission in the US Navy on April 23, 1943, and married Lina Marie Wiebusch the following day. He served as officer on several ships, was assigned as the Assistant Naval Attaché to the US Embassy in Moscow, as an Intelligence Officer to NATO, and was Captain of both the USS Bache and USS Cronin. For his service, which began with the Underwater Demolitions Team 3 (precursor to the Navy SEALS), he received honors including the Silver Star, Asiatic-Pacific, American Campaign, World War II Victory, Occupation Medal, and Expeditionary Medals. In 1967, he completed a Master's Degree in Personnel Administration at George Washington University. He retired from the Navy with the rank of Commander in 1969. Afterwards, he worked for 13 years at the Virginia Employment Commission. He was co-founder and Commodore of the Norfolk Naval Sailing Association, which lead to the creation of the National Naval Sailing Association. He was very active with the Elizabeth River Power Squadron, Toastmasters, Red Cross Disaster Relief, Mathews Senior Center, American Legion, Ruritan Club, and AARP 55 Alive. He was preceded in death by his parents Karl and Martha, wife Lina, and brother Norman Scheid. He is survived by sisters Margaret McKinley and Millicent Denzer; companion Betty Clark; children Carolyn Deters, Linda Dyer, and Timothy Scheid; grandchildren Erich Deters, Christopher, Brian and Dana Reynolds, Jeremy Scheid, and William Dyer; great-grandchildren Logan and Lance Deters; and many other loving family members. The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday October 27, at Kingston Parish, 320 Williams Wharf Rd., Mathews, VA 23109. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the UDT SEAL Museum in Fort Pierce, FL or the Mathews County, VA Meals on Wheels program.
