On the morning of February 6, 2016 Charlie Akers, of Topping, VA, passed away during a procedure at Walter Reed Hospital in Gloucester, Virginia while fighting a MRSA infection. Charlie had been battling End Stage Renal Disease, overcoming double amputations, and other health issues for 15 years. Charlie was 71 years old. Charlie was born on May 26th, 1944 in Richmond, Virginia. He was one of the six children of Dorothy and Leonard Akers. He retired from Sydnor Hydrodynamics after 30+ years. He loved sweet foods, race cars, his family and his pets. He survived by father, Leonard (92), sisters, Mary (Ronnie) and Pat (Tom), brother David “Bo” (Marion), daughters, Carol Akers, Dawn Pitts, Devon Killian Blair (Eric) and Heather Killian, grandson, Lee Pitts, and his partner of 20 years, Barbara Killian. He was preceded in death by his mother, Dorothy, and brothers, Eugene and Leonard “Cotton.” A celebration of life will be held at Lower United Methodist Church on Saturday, February 13th, 2016. There will be an open casket visitation at 10 am and a brief worship service at 11 am, with a reception following the graveside service. Friends and family are invited to stay for the reception.
