Our dear husband, father, and grandfather, Charles Harding Buchanan, who most knew as “Bubbie” & “Big Daddy”, passed away on Sunday, January 29, 2023. A native of Gwynn’s Island, he was born on May 26, 1944, and resided with his wife in Cobbs Creek for many years, prior to joining the Lord.
He was preceded in death by his son, James Robert Buchanan; father, Willie Buchanan; mother, Clara Buchanan, and sister-in-law, Mae Buchanan.
He is survived by his wife, Phyllis Davis Buchanan. Charles and Phyllis would have been married for 57 years on February 6th. He is also survived by his son, Charles Allen (Lori); grandchildren, Chase (Emma), Morgan (Brandon); brother, Coles; nephew, Coles Jr. (Debbie) and a great-nephew, Christopher (Hanna).
Charles was a commercial fisherman with his son for many years onboard the boats Miss Phyllis and Morgan’s Pride. There were many things that were precious to Charles, but the things he was most proud of include his wife, family, boat, fishing, and just being on the water. He loved our weekly Wednesday night dinners at his house and sitting in the garage with the men drinking a beer or two. He had many friends and was a well-loved member of the community where he was born and raised.
The family will receive friends on Sunday, February 5, 2023 from 12:30 to 2:00 p.m. at Faulkner Funeral Homes, Foster-Faulkner Chapel, Mathews, Virginia. A Funeral service will be held in the funeral home chapel at 2:00 p.m. with burial to follow at Gwynn’s Island Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Mathews Volunteer Rescue Squad, 94 Cricket Hill Road, Hudgins, Virginia 23076, the Mathews Volunteer Fire Department, P.O. Box 1130, Mathews, Virginia 23109 or the Haynes Cemetery Fund at P.O. Box 777 Cobbs Creek, VA 23035.
