Charlotte Ransone

March 6, 1931 — November 1, 2014

Charlotte Coalter Enslow Ransone passed away Saturday, November 1, 2014 at the age of 83. She was born March 6, 1931 in Fort Sill, Oklahoma, the daughter of Colonel Phillip Harrison Enslow, USA, Ret. and Charlotte Coalter Enslow.

As a young woman she learned to embrace and love travel as she lived on many U.S. Army posts across the country and in Germany, but she always considered Virginia to be her home. She attended Collegiate School in Richmond where she made many dear friends while living on West Avenue and spending the summers at Marengo Farm in New Kent County with her mother; brother; aunt, Elizabeth Frances Coalter and many of her Gregory family cousins. Charlotte graduated from Stuart Hall School in Staunton; then matriculated at Hollins College, later graduating with her education degree from the Richmond Professional Institute of the College of William and Mary.

Miss Charlotte moved to Mathews County, Virginia with her husband Sterling N. Ransone, MD in 1957, living in his family home "Old Pine". She taught second grade at Lee-Jackson School and attended Kingston Episcopal Parish where she was active with the Episcopal Church Women and the Altar Guild. She was a member of the Jamestowne Society and the Colonial Dames of America and was active with the Descendents of St. George Tucker. She was a member of and held leadership roles in many civic organizations including the Mathews Woman's Club, the Woman's Club of Richmond, the Mathews and Gloucester Garden Clubs, the Garden Club of Virginia and the Red Hat Society. She was active with the Mid-Tidewater Medical Society Alliance and later in her career managed her husband's medical practice. She loved to cook and try new recipes, along with preparing old family favorites for her loved ones. She enjoyed movies, especially old westerns, and going to the theater but often would prefer to hunker down with a good book. She was also an avid bridge player and loved to teach and share with others her joy of the game.

She is survived by her son Sterling N. Ransone, Jr, MD, his wife Karen A. Ransone, MD, and grandchildren Elizabeth Miller, Katherine Enslow and Sterling N. III (Scooter) of Mathews; her brother Lt. Col. Philip H. Enslow, Jr., PhD. and his wife Dianne G. Enslow of Atlanta, Georgia; as well as many nieces, great-nephews, cousins and friends.

A celebration of her life will begin with a visitation to be held on Thursday, November 6, 2014 at Foster-Faulkner Funeral Home, Mathews from 4:00 – 6:30 pm, and a Graveside Service to be held on Sunday, November 9, 2014 at 2:00 pm in the Christ Episcopal Church Cemetery, Williams Wharf Road, Mathews. A reception will follow.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Ransone Family Fund for Education, c/o the Mathews Community Foundation. Foster-Faulkner Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Mathews, Virginia is in charge of the arrangements.
