Clyde Thrift

December 31, 1969 — May 24, 2016

Clyde Atwell Thrift, 88, of Urbanna, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by loved ones on May 24, 2016. He was preceded in death by his parents Joseph Tyler and Clara Purcell Thrift and Brother Joseph Tyler Thrift, Jr. He is survived by his loving devoted wife of 66 years, Jacqueline Richardson Thrift, daughter Patrice Thrift Wake and husband Chappy, granddaughter Tyler Wake Daniel and husband Emory, aunt Mabel Purcell Broach, brother in law Jeff McDaniel, special friend Lillie Braxton and loyal companions dog Lou and grand dog Olivia.  At an early age Clyde joined the family business, J. T. & C. A. Thrift, Inc. (Thrift Oil Company), which his father started in 1919. In 1974 his daughter and son in law joined him in the business. Thrift Oil Company joined Delta Oil Company in July of 1986, as a subsidiary. He served as Chairman of Thrift’s Board of Directors and on Delta’s Board and retired in 2004. He was a gentle man with a huge heart frequently helping someone in need. He had a special passion for maintaining his yard and raising his garden, joyfully giving most of his bounty to friends and neighbors. The family would like to express special gratitude to Ann Lockley, Marilyn Briggs & Melissa Hall for the special love and care shown to Clyde and his family during the last years of his illness and to Rev Hyung Moon, Dr. and Mrs. Ronald Haggerty and staff and also Riverside Hospice especially Nurse Christy for their faithful support. Clyde was a member of Urbanna United Methodist Church where a memorial service will be held on Thursday June 2, 2016 at 2 pm. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Urbanna United Methodist Church, P O Box 217, Urbanna, Va. 23175 or Friends of Middlesex County Public Schools (Syd Thrift Athletic Complex), P O Box 353, Saluda, Va. 23149.
