Cynthia Churchill (Kippy) Gilbert of Mathews, Virginia passed away on Thursday, February 27, 2025, just shy of her 90th birthday.
Born in Canton, Ohio on April 26, 1935, Kippy was the middle child of Paul and Mary Young. A graduate of Ohio University, she taught middle school science in various locations, most recently in Richmond and Mathews.
Kippy lived in Mathews for 46 years and was deeply involved in Kingston Parish Episcopal Church, where she served as a Vestry member, Lay Reader, Lay Visitor, and Choir member. She was active on the Scholarship Committee, in the Soup with Love program, and she also contributed her famous mustard to numerous Fall Fairs. In the Mathews community, she volunteered with Meals on Wheels and as a reader at the Mathews Convalescent Center. A devoted mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, Kippy cherished spending time with her family and sending birthday cards to friends and extended family, near and far.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank W. Gilbert, and her sister, Dr. Kathryn A. Schmeding.
She is survived by her brother, Dr. Paul C. Young; children, Laura Carr (Dabney), Scott Gilbert, and Angie Miller; grandchildren, Quint Carr, Peter Carr (Sophie), Sarah Carr, Nicholas Stump (Joanie), and Alex Miller (Tyler Hilling); and great-grandchildren, Carsen and Harlee Stump.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, March 14, 2025, at Christ Church, Kingston Parish, in Mathews, Virginia. A reception will follow at the Parish House.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Kingston Parish, P.O. Box 471, Mathews, Virginia 23109, or to the Mathews Volunteer Rescue Squad, 94 Cricket Hill Road, Mathews, Virginia 23109. Faulkner Funeral Homes, Foster-Faulkner Chapel, Mathews is assisting the family.
