David Bruce Mortimer, age 71, at rest on May 14, 2016. Loving husband of Grace (Coggeshall) for 47 years, father of Scott N. (Teresa) and Randolph J. (Kathy), grandfather of Byice, Marcy, Emily and Ella of Richmond. Brother of James D. of Michigan. Born to Don and Jean Mortimer on December 27, 1944 in Chicago, IL, Dave grew up in Naperville, IL and graduated near the top of his high school class in 1963. He earned his degree in engineering operations at Iowa State University in 1967. After a summer job with Reynolds Metals in Chicago, he was invited to join the engineering division and moved to the Richmond headquarters. He became a specialist in acoustical engineering. He retired in 1997. Dave and his family love the water. Sailing and fishing on the Chesapeake Bay led them to purchase property there in 2006. They moved into their new home on the property this February. He has helped restore several historic vessels at the Mathews Maritime Foundation. For many winters in his early retirement he and Grace went camping and fishing in Florida and its Everglades. Dave will be remembered by family and many friends for his kindness, initiative, spirit and strong principles. His early passing is a great loss to all who knew him. A memorial service will begin at 2:00 PM on Saturday, May 21 at Central United Methodist Church, 121 Church Street in Mathews, VA. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to: Mathews Maritime Foundation.
