David Michael Valenta, known affectionately as Commander, Dad, Daddy, or Grandpa, passed away on Thursday, December 5, 2024, at his home “Moon Wind Castle”, in Moon, Virginia. He was number eleven of thirteen children born to Febronia and Bohus Valenta. David was born on August 2, 1942, in Endicott, New York. A graduate of Henry B. Endicott Primary School and Union Endicott High School, David’s early education laid the foundation for his illustrious career and his lifelong passion for learning and improvement.

David was a proud Vietnam War veteran and dedicated serviceman, committing 28 years to the U. S. Navy. Rising through the ranks beginning as an enlisted sailor, he retired as a Lieutenant Commander, a testament to his hard work and dedication to his country.

After his military career, David continued to apply his leadership skills as a Superintendent of crane and rigging operations at MHI ship repair services, where he was equally respected for his work ethic and ability to manage complex projects. His industrious nature was also evident in his personal life, where he single-handedly built two homes, showcasing his remarkable self-taught skills in construction and problem-solving.

David was a devoted husband to his beloved wife, Dolores Marie (Tietjen) Valenta (a.k.a. Lorrie), and a loving father to his children, David Michael, Jr. (Beth) and Jennifer Lynn Valenta Tietjen. His legacy continues through his grandchildren, Dustin Tietjen, Brandon Tietjen-Abner, and Sage Tietjen-Forsythe, as well as his five remaining siblings. He was preceded in death by his parents, Febronia and Bohus Valenta, and seven siblings.

David will be remembered for his love of country, his unyielding work ethic, and his ability to inspire those around him. His contributions to his family, his community, and his nation leave an indelible mark that will not be forgotten.
