It is with great regret and sadness that we announce the passing of Davidson J “Dan” Gill, of Remlik. Dan was born December 28, 1944, and died October 9, 2014. Dan grew up on Remlik Hall Farm, graduated from Virginia Tech in 1968 and joined the Army shortly thereafter. Dan served in the Vietnam War, and was awarded the Bronze Star. After the war, he returned to Virginia Tech, earned a Masters in Poultry Science and met and married his wife Barbara Gill. They returned to the farm where he took up turkey, cattle and crop farming and raised a family. During those years, he was also a member of the Chesapeake Bay Preservation Association and served two terms on the Middlesex County Board of Supervisors. His interest in local history, food, and music inspired him to open Something Different Country Store and Deli with his daughter Sarah. He could often be found out by the BBQ pits, listening to blues or bluegrass, creating new recipes or perfecting old ones and researching topics for his next article. He loved sharing his stories with others. Dan was an avid writer for Pleasant Living Magazine. His “Blurbs, Ruminations and Esoterica” captured the essence of his youth, local history and little known insights into food. A self-proclaimed ethno-gastronomist, Dan specialized in “Fine Neanderthal Cuisine”, and there was a story behind almost everything he did. Dan’s one of a kind character found its way into the hearts of so many. He lived life to its fullest, his presence is irreplaceable and he will be missed enormously. Dan is survived by his wife Barbara Gill, daughters Sarah (Anthony) Kimble and Shelley (Becky) Gill, granddaughter Taylor Lockley and Courtney Kimble, grandson Evan Gill and sisters Rebecca Gill and Jean (Jim) Cavin. He is also leaving behind many nieces and nephews, and the Something Different family. He was preceded in death by his mother, Helen Davidson Gill and father Virgil Headley Gill. Visitation will be Wednesday October 15, 2014 from 6-8pm at Bristow-Faulkner Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Saluda. Funeral services will be held at 521 Sunderland Creek Road, Remlik Hall Farm at 1pm, Thursday, October 16, 2014. Graveside services with military honors will immediately follow in Christ Church Episcopal Cemetery, Rte. 33 in Middlesex. Bring your best Dan stories to Something Different in Urbanna, VA following the burial to honor his memory.
