Don Deaton

December 31, 1969 — August 19, 2018

Don Wilson Deaton, 82 of Mathews passed away peacefully at his residence with his family at his side. Don was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Phyllis “Beach” Deaton. He is survived by his children Debbie Holaday (Tom), Donne Witt (Bill), Doug Deaton (Beth), Danny Deaton, Penny Rylott (David); 8 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren; brother Joel Deaton (Andy); sisters, Ann Nipper (Darrell) and Brenda Spruill (Dale); and his dog “JEB”. He also leaves behind his good friend and hunting buddy Brian Carroll. He was also preceded in death by his parents and a brother Paul Deaton.

Don started his career as a Biology and P.E. teacher, at Kenbridge High School, where he became assistant principal and then principal, he also coached football. He was an integral part of the formation of Kenston Forest School, where he served as the headmaster and head football coach. He founded and was past President of the Virginia Independent Athletic Association Conference. He furthered his career, being a part of four independent schools as their headmaster. He served as the business manager at Christ Church School. After retirement he worked a 40-hour week at Home Depot where he became fondly known to customers and co-workers as “Mr. Don”. Don enjoyed the outdoors, spending time fishing, hunting and gardening with his children and friends. He was a member of Mill Swamp Hunt Club for 32 years.

Family and friends are invited to celebrate his life with a service and reception on Sunday, August 26, 2018 at 1 p.m. on the shore of the Chesapeake Bay at 192 Tidal Pond Lane, Hudgins, VA 23076. The family will receive friends on Saturday August 25, 2018 from 5 to 6 p.m. at Faulkner Funeral Homes, Foster Faulkner Chapel, 160 Main Street, Mathews, VA 23109. In lieu of flowers the family request donations be made to the Don and Phyllis “Beach” Deaton scholarship fund c/o Chesapeake Bank P. O. Box 1078, Mathews, VA 23109.
