Dorothy Topping

December 31, 1969 — February 27, 2015

Dorothy Moore Topping, 99, of Deltaville passed away peacefully on February 27, 2015 after a brief illness. She was predeceased by her husband, Paul Everette Topping; her parents, Elzie David Moore and Almedia Moffitt Moore; and maternal cousin, Margaret Moffitt Robins, who was like a close sister to Dorothy. She is survived by her children, Sharon Topping (James T. Lindley), Paulette Topping, and Paul Everette Topping; two grandchildren, Michael and Paul Lewis; and, two great grandchildren. Dorothy was a housewife and stay-at-home mother until the death of her husband in February 1959. Knowing that she had to raise three children alone, she attended and graduated from business school, eventually retiring from the Middlesex County Health Department. She was a wonderful mother to Sharon, Paulette, and Everette, and as they matured into adults, she became their best friend. She enjoyed traveling with family and friends to such places as Canada, Mexico, New Orleans, Germany, Switzerland, and many others, but best of all she enjoyed shopping. “Shopping until you drop” didn’t apply to Dorothy since she kept going and going just like the Energizer Bunny. She had a strong faith in God and in her youth attended Philippi Christian Church with her mother. Later in life, Dorothy became a member of Clarksburg Methodist Church with her husband and children. Of all things she loved, Deltaville was at the top of her list. She believed it was the ONLY place to live, and she never missed an opportunity to brag about Deltaville to everyone she met. Consequently, she, along with her husband, were very active at the local and state levels particularly the Deltaville Community Association (formerly the Deltaville Improvement Association). After her husband’s death, she continued her DCA involvement becoming one of the driving forces behind the 4th July Parade, the Ricky Taylor Memorial Pool, and the Deltaville calendar. She also was a great supporter of the Deltaville Maritime Museum and Nature Park attending many meetings, farmer’s markets, dinners, and concerts. Due to her participation in Deltaville events, she was selected to serve as one of the Grand Marshalls in the Deltaville Heritage Day Parade. A celebration of Dorothy Topping’s life will be held on Tuesday, March 3 at Philippi Christian Church in Deltaville. Visitation will begin at 10:00 a.m. with the service starting at 11:00 a.m. A catered lunch will be served afterwards in the church fellowship hall. Interment will be in the Norris Cemetery in Deltaville. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in her memory to the Middlesex Volunteer Rescue Squad, the Lower Middlesex Volunteer Fire Department, and the Deltaville Maritime Museum and Nature Park.
