Evelyn LaVern Anthony, age 76, of Mathews, Virginia went to be with her Lord on Saturday, May 31, 2014 with family by her side after a courageous battle with cancer. She was born April 1, 1938 in Norton, Virginia and was a Mathews County resident for 40 years. She worked as a certified nurse's aide at Horn Harbor Nursing Home, New Point, VA and Elizabeth Haynes Nursing Home on Gwynn's Island, VA. She was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and friend and will be greatly missed by her family. She attended Salem United Methodist Church, Moon, Virginia. She loved to crochet, making many afghans in her life, but the highlight of her day was doing her crossword puzzles. LaVern was preceded in death by her parents, George and Thelma Honeycutt, her husband, George "Tony" Anthony, and her sister, Mary Alice Chandler. She is survived by her two daughters, Laura Garrett and Christina Owens of Mathews, VA; two sons, Allen Minor and his wife Paige of Smithfield, VA and Russell Minor of Gloucester, VA; two sisters, Shelby Martindale and Shirley McGonigal of Texas; two brothers, Richard Honeycutt of North Carolina and Calvin Honeycutt of South Dakota. She is also survived by six grandchildren, Justin Brown of Richmond, VA, Nathan Brown of Fluvanna, VA, Amanda Owens of Vancouver, WA, Robbie Minor of South Hill, VA, Christopher Minor of Chase City, MD, Brandon Minor of Cardinal, VA and two step grandsons Matt and Luke Holloman; eight great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and many friends and a special cousin Hubert Metcalf of North Carolina. The family will receive friends on Tuesday, June 3, 2014 from 7 -9 p.m. at Foster-Faulkner Funeral Home, Mathews, VA. A Funeral Service will be held in the Funeral Home Chapel on Wednesday, June 4, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. with burial to follow in Woodlawn Cemetery in Kilmarnock, VA. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, c/o Katie Dutton, P.O. Box 218, Cobbs Creek, VA. There will be a time of food and fellowship with the family at 2:30 p.m. at Salem United Methodist Church fellowship hall following the burial.
