Evelyn Quillin Ryland, 95, Urbanna resident of 74 years and native of Southwest Virginia, died peacefully at home Sunday, August 30, 2015. She was predeceased by her husband of 59 years, J. William (Bill) Ryland. She was the daughter of Hubert A. Quillin and Rose Slemp Johnson Quillin and the sister of the late Howard Quillin, all of Kingsport, TN. Former Sunday school teacher, postmaster, small business owner, author, and area historian, Evelyn contributed greatly to her church and community. She and her husband Bill served in countless church and civic roles and always welcomed friends and visitors into their Urbanna Creek home on “the hill.” Evelyn authored and co-authored Historic Buildings in Middlesex County Virginia 1650-1875; Urbanna- A Port Town in Virginia 1680-1980; and History of Urbanna Baptist Church 1888-2003 A Little Church with a Large Ministry. She owned Miss Bettie’s Antiques. She loved arranging flowers for special days in the lives of friends. She is survived by: two sons, Walter H. Ryland and his wife Madelaine Aerni Ryland of Richmond and John William Ryland III and his wife Claudia Robins Ryland of Williamsburg; four grandchildren: Mark Ryland and his wife Corbin Brierre Ryland of Richmond; Caroline Ryland of Virginia Beach; Ashley Ryland Willis and her husband John Willis of Williamsburg; and John Page Ryland and his wife Betsy Ryland of Richmond; eight great grandchildren; Cooper Ryland of Richmond, Alexis Covington of Caroline County; Ryland, Ben, and Reed Willis of Williamsburg; and Page, Cole, and Audrey Ryland of Richmond. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends from 5-7p.m., Thursday, September 3rd, at Bristow-Faulkner Funeral Home, Saluda. Funeral services will be held 11a.m., Friday, September 4 at Urbanna Baptist Church with reception following at the church.
