Helen Kostyal

Helen Lampathakis Kostyal passed away at home on Thursday, August 29, 2013. She was a graduate of Hampton High School 1946 and Westhampton College of the University of Richmond 1950. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Newport News and was a teacher for 23 years at Whythe Elementary of Hampton. Having lived in Hampton most of her life, she retired to Mathews County in 1973, where she was a member of the Mathews Woman's Club, Garden Club of Mathews, Meals On Wheels, Mathews Baptist Church and Flotilla 66, U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary.

She is survived by her husband, Richard Daniel Kostyal of Mathews; daughters Karen and her husband Charles Smith of Alexandria; Kristen and her husband Pete Dolan of Yorktown and Kimberly and her husband Dennis Dimick of Arlington; five grandchildren; Brandon and Justin Wood, Will Smith, Claudia and Sofia Dimick and two great-grandchildren, Bryce and Sydney Wood.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, September 1, 2013 in Mathews Baptist Church, Hudgins, Virginia with interment to follow in H.C. Smither Memorial Cemetery, Hudgins. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to: Mathews Baptist Church Building Fund, P. O. Box 8, Hudgins, VA 23076 or Riverside Walter Reed Hospice, 7358 Main St., Gloucester, VA 23061.
