Herbert Stanley Jr.

September 27, 1938 — February 9, 2023

H. Herbert “Herb” Stanley, Jr. passed away peacefully at home on Thursday, February 9,

2023.

With deepest sorrow, we announce that our beloved husband, father, and grandfather,

H. Herbert “Herb” Stanley, Jr., 84, has passed. After an extended fight with cancer, he

was called to his Heavenly resting place from his Hartfield home.

Herb was born September 27, 1938, in his parents’ home, Robeson County, NC. He

shared 61 happy years with his loving wife, Ann, who gave him two sons, Mark (Paige)

and Doug (Jenny). He also leaves behind four beloved grandchildren, Ryan, Jacob,

Jenna, and Whill; brother, Jimmy (Nita); sister, Gayle Walters (Kevin); and five nieces

and nephews. He was predeceased by his father, H. Herbert, Sr. and mother and

stepfather, Vera Grace and William “Bill” Sumrall.

After graduating from Hampton High School, he enrolled at Richmond Professional

Institute (RPI). Upon his graduation from RPI in 1968, he began his accounting career

in Kilmarnock. Including stints in the seafood industry and Nursing Home Management

(Comptroller of Mizpah Nursing Home), Herb spent over 50 years as an accountant and

CPA serving the Northern Neck and Middle Peninsula with offices in Urbanna, Cobbs

Creek, and Gloucester. He had many long-term clients including those in the seafood

industry stretching from Bena to Reedville.

Active in the community, he was a member of the Urbanna Chamber of Commerce

Board of Directors (Treasurer), Middlesex County Lions Club (President), Gloucester

Point Rotary Club (Paul Harris Fellow), and a board member of the York Academy Board

of Trustees (Treasurer). He also served as a Tee Ball Coach for the Middlesex Youth

Baseball ”Syringa” team, and as a coach for the Middlesex County Youth Basketball

“Little Curiosity Shop” team. Herb loved to fish the Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries

for flounder, spot, and croaker from his boat “My Dream,” bird hunt with his pointers

Chip and Sam, and roadtrip to Parker’s BBQ.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in memory of Herb Stanley to Hartfield

Volunteer Fire Department or Lower United Methodist Church.

Herb’s last year was difficult for him as he became less independent, but he always had

a positive attitude. His family thanks the many friends who stopped by to see him.

The family will receive friends at 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm followed by a memorial service

and internment on Saturday, March 4, at Lower United Methodist Church, Hartfield.

Family will receive friends afterwards at the Piankatank Golf Course.
