Howard Louis Parrish III (HL) 71, of Deltaville, Va., formerly of Prince George County, Va., lost his battle to Leukemia on July 3, 2018. He was the son of Howard L. and Inez C. Parrish, Jr. HL is survived by his wife of 46 years, Janet M. Parrish; his “Favorite” daughter Lindsey P. Guirgues, her husband Asser, and their daughter Emerson of Glen Allen; one brother R. Craig Parrish and his wife Linda of Prince George; a brother-in-law Robert T. Morris and his wife Brenda of Waverly; a sister-in-law Suzanne Morris of Parksley; and several nieces and nephews.
Prior to his retirement in 2003, HL was Supervisor of the 11th District Court Service Unit. He supervised Dinwiddie, Amelia, Nottoway, and Powhatan Counties. He founded the Dinwiddie County Youth Advisory Board which funded the Bay Excursion Program for Court-involved youth, a Board which is still providing opportunities today. His legacy continues to enrich the lives of youth who deserve a second chance.
HL was a Vietnam War Veteran and the recipient of a Purple Heart for wounds received in action on December 14, 1968. Upon retirement, he and Janet relocated to Deltaville where their love of the Chesapeake Bay could be enjoyed. This move led him to take the Captains Course which he completed in June 2004 which enabled him to run charters for a few years. HL was an avid boater, fisherman, and pickle baller, and it took an ‘act of Congress’ to get him away from the Bay for even a short period of time. One exception was going to visit his granddaughter Emerson. Emerson loved her “Cappy” as much as he loved her. She was the “Apple of his Eye”.
A celebration of life will be held at the Deltaville Maritime Museum & Holly Point Nature Park, 287 Jackson Creek Road, Deltaville, Va 23043, on Sunday, July 29, 2018 from 2 - 4 p.m.
