Jack Ittner

Jack Ross Ittner, 87, of Port Haywood, beloved husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather, passed away on Sunday, January 15, 2012. Jack was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Harriet Messick Ittner; 2 brothers, Garland, Merrill and a sister, Evelyn. Born and raised in Richmond, Jack was a star athlete at John Marshall High School and a member of the football team that went unbeaten and unscored on one season. Jack enlisted in the Seabees after high school and served in the Pacific Islands during WWII. After the war Jack enrolled at Virginia Tech and was co-captain of the first football team from Virginia to play in a national bowl game, the 1946 Sun Bowl. At Virginia Tech Jack met his wife, Harriet. After graduation Jack and Harriet moved to Richmond where they raised 4 “Hokies”, Terry, Wayne, Karl and Tina. Jack owned several gas stations on Patterson Avenue during the 1960’s. After moving to Hague in Westmoreland County, Virginia, Jack was the head football coach at Washington and Lee High School in Montross and worked at the Montross Post Office. After retiring, Jack and Harriet moved to Urbanna, Virginia to enjoy fishing and boating. Jack and Harriet’s home in Urbanna was a lively meeting place for family and long time friends from his football and Seabees days; picking up crabs and talking sports was the norm. Jack is survived by his 4 children, 7 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Jack will be remembered for his easy going personality, quick wit and gentle manner. Jack will be greatly missed and we know how blessed we were to have had him and Harriet in our lives. Services to celebrate Jack’s life at the Bristow-Faulkner Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Saluda, will be held 2:00 PM, Tuesday, January 24, 2012. Goodbye Dad, We love you.
