James Cavin

December 31, 1969 — August 7, 2015

James Bruce Cavin, 84, passed away peacefully at home in Urbanna, Virginia, Friday, August 7, 2015.  Jim was born in 1931 in Waukegan, IL to Elmer and Helen Cavin.  He attended the University of Illinois, followed by service in the Navy.  He met Jean Gill at the College of William & Mary, and they were married in Urbanna, VA in 1957.  Jim worked at Remlik Hall Farm with Virgil and Helen Gill before moving with Jean to Richmond, VA where he joined Reynolds Metals Company in 1959.  In 1961, Jim and Jean settled in the Chicago, IL suburb of Northbrook, where they had three children.  Jim and his family returned to Richmond in1968.  In 1971, Jim moved his family to Breckenridge, CO, an authentic mining town in the Rocky Mountains, where he and a business partner started a real estate development company.  Jim, his business partner and many others, were instrumental in helping Breckenridge become one of the nation’s most popular ski destinations.  In later years, Jim and Jean began spending time in Denver, Palm Springs, CA and in Virginia.  In retirement, they regularly spent winters in Palm Springs and summers at Remlik Hall Farm in Virginia. Jim is survived by his wife of 58 years, Jean Gill Cavin, their three children, Martha (James Muth) of Bozeman, MT, Sarah (Dana Gordon) of Pebble Beach, CA, and Christopher Cavin (Lisa) of Greenwich, CT; his sister, Nancy Sheila Simonian of Chicago, and 5 grandchildren.  Jim was preceded in death by his sister Joy Vessey. The family will receive friends at Bristow-Faulkner Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Saluda,  Thursday, August 13 from 5:00 – 6:30 p.m. A funeral will be held at Christ Church on Friday, August 14, 2015 at 11:00 a.m., followed by burial at the church cemetery at Christchurch, VA. Memorial contributions may be made to Christ Church, P.O. Box 476, Saluda, VA 23149, the American Lung Association, 55 W. Wacker Drive, Suite 1150, Chicago, IL 60601, or a charity of your choice.
