James E. “Jim” Omweg, age 90 of Gloucester, VA, passed away peacefully on Monday, July 24, 2023, at Riverside Lifelong Health & Rehabilitation Center in Mathews, VA. He was born in Shelby, Ohio on July 1, 1933, the oldest son of the late Ernest A Omweg and Edith Irene Lybarger Omweg. Jim attended Ohio State University and received his bachelor’s degree in agriculture in 1959 and his master’s degree in agriculture in 1963. He married Judith E. Payn on June 15, 1958.
After college he taught vocational agriculture for several years and then pursued a career as a sales representative for Ohio Edison, where he worked for 30 years. In 1978, Jim and his family moved to Champion, where he was an active member of Champion Presbyterian Church for over 35 years, as well as a recognized member of the local Rotary. He served in many capacities at the church prior to moving to Virginia in 2016. He enjoyed following Ohio State University football and basketball teams, and especially the Cleveland Guardians.
Jim is survived by his two daughters, Rebecca Omweg of New York, NY, and Lynne Snyder of Warren, OH; two sons, Chris Omweg (Leah) of Yorktown, VA, and Michael Omweg (Janine) of Astoria, NY. Jim was especially proud of his six grandchildren, Elizabeth Snyder, Kathleen Snyder, Sydney Omweg, Taylor Omweg, Charles Omweg and Addison Omweg; and three great-grandchildren, Jace Alalamua, Xeno Alalamua and Bia Alalamua.
He is also survived by his brother John Omweg (Beth) in York, PA. He was preceded in death by his wife of 55 years, Judy Omweg, and his son-in-law, David Snyder.
There will be a memorial service held at Champion Presbyterian Church on Saturday, August 5, 2023, at 11 a.m. The service will be followed by a reception and fellowship at noon. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the James Omweg Memorial Fund at Champion Presbyterian Church, 4997 Mahoning Ave. NW, Warren, OH 44483.
