James Thompson

October 20, 1939 — April 2, 2012

James (Jim) Christian Thompson Sr., 72, of Urbanna, Virginia passed away Monday April 2, 2012.

He was born on October 20, 1939 in Brooklyn, New York and raised in Richmond, Virginia. He is preceded in death by his parents, Matthew Christie Thompson and Jane Bock Carner.

He is survived by his older brother, Matthew Christie (Chris) Thompson Jr.; children, Jane Loving, James C. (Jim) Thompson Jr.; Matthew (Earle) Thompson, and Dallas Scales; his grandchildren, Danielle Myers, Lauren Moore, Kelly Thompson, Jessie Thompson, Tim Thompson, Kerry Parker, Katie Kenney, and Libby Scales; his great-grandchildren Nicholas Parker, Karli Parker, and Aiden Kenney; and a very dear friend Suzanne Loehr.

As a youth, Jim was active in both the Boy Scouts and Sea Scouts. He graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School in Richmond. Shortly after high school he joined the United States Marine Corps. After serving his tour, he went on to attend West Virginia University and the E. Claiborne Robins School of Business at the University of Richmond where he graduated with honors in Economics. During his lifetime he founded and owned several successful businesses in both Richmond and Middlesex County. He also held an active Coast Guard 100 ton “master mariner” license, a private pilot license, real estate license, and a Class A builders license. Some of his passions in this life were cooking, traveling, being a charter boat captain aboard his boat the “Jim-an-i”, and competitively participating in the national dog field trials with his much-loved Labrador and two-time national field-trail champion, Strike Sweet Tina.

Those who really knew Jim will cherish his memory forever in their hearts. He was loved by those people more than he could ever know and will be greatly missed.
