It is with the heaviest of hearts, that our family announces the passing of our beloved, brother, father and grandfather, James Richard “Dick” Waddell, 87, of Mathews, Virginia on Wednesday, January 20, 2021. He moved to Mathews in 1992 with his cherished wife, Janis. Mesmerized by the everlasting beauty of the property and water views, it was the perfect setting to an amazing life and retirement. Dick is an alumni of Virginia Tech, loved the football games and tailgating. He served 2 years in the U.S. Army and was stationed at Walter Reed. He owned Waddell Construction for 35 years. He embraced travel and good times with friends and family. His kind and enduring demeanor will be deeply missed.
Dick is predeceased by his loving wife, Janis Weddington and only daughter, Deborah Anne.
He is survived by his younger brother, David Barry; sons, Steven Richard, David Todd, and Richard Alan (Christine); grandchildren, Sarah Marie (Gregg), James Andrew (Megan), Rachel Anne (James), Ian Kyle, David Alan, and James Alexander; 3 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great grandchild.
Visitation will be held at the family home 1016 New Point Comfort Hwy., Mathews on Saturday, January 23, 2021 from 2 – 7:00 p.m. A Funeral Service will be held on Sunday, January 24, 2021 at 4:00 p.m. at Faulkner Funeral Homes, Foster-Faulkner Chapel, Mathews, Virginia. Interment will be held on Monday, January 25, 2021 at 11:00 a.m. at Mount Comfort Cemetery, 6600 South King Hwy, Alexandria, Virginia. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Mathews Volunteer Rescue Squad, 94 Cricket Hill Road, Hudgins, Virginia 23076.
