Jane Elizabeth Brown, 65, of Water View, Virginia went to her heavenly home on February 19, 2015 after a brief illness. She was surrounded by her family – her devoted husband of 45 years and high school sweetheart, Robert Brown, and her two daughters, Jamie Hantman of New York, New York, and Meredith Vantress of Tampa, Florida. She is also survived by two sons-in-law, David Hantman and COL Jack Vantress; three grandchildren, Jack Benjamin Vantress II, Samantha Vantress, and Emma Hantman; and four beloved brothers, James Hammond of Corrales, New Mexico, Jeffery Hammond of Durham, Connecticut, Daniel Hammond of Palm Springs, California, and Richard Hammond of Northford, Connecticut. She was preceded in death by her father, James Samuel Hammond, and her mother, Sarah Dorothy Barrett Hammond. Jane received a B.A. and M.A. from Central Connecticut State University and spent her 36 year career devoted to educating young people, inspiring them to achieve, and mentoring the younger teachers with whom she worked. She began her teaching career at Emmanuel Christian Academy in Newington, Connecticut, and went on to teach at Calvary Baptist Academy in Normal Illinois, teach and serve as high school principal at Hollywood Christian School in Hollywood, Florida, and teach and serve as high school principal at Annapolis Area Christian School in Annapolis, Maryland.
Her commitment to her colleagues and students went beyond the classroom, with her regularly opening up her home to extra study groups fueled by her delicious homemade treats. She loved the Christmas season, reading, her women’s Bible study group, baking, and doting on her family, who loved her so dearly. A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, February 24, 2015 at 2pm at the Urbanna Baptist Church, 121 Watling Street, Urbanna, Virginia. The funeral will be held on Friday, February 27, 2015 at Branford Evangelical Free Church, 231 Leetes Island Road, Branford, Connecticut. Visitation begins at 10am, with the service beginning at 11. Reception will follow in the fellowship hall.
Well done, thou good and faithful servant.
