Janet Hollberg

Janet Grant Hollberg passed away on Saturday morning March 13, 2021 at her home at Rappahannock Westminster Canterbury in Lancaster County, Virginia. She was born January 18, 1932 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She was the daughter of Hugh T. and Ella Grant.
Jan was preceded in death by her husband, Herbert J. Hollberg, the love of her life, to whom she was married 52 years, and by her sisters, Beverly Grant Schrupp and Patricia Grant Stevenson. She is survived by her sons, Steven S. Hollberg (Wanda) of Urbanna, Virginia, Mark D. Hollberg (Sara) of Staunton, Virginia, and Peter J. Hollberg (Lara) of Moseley, Va; grandchildren, Ellery Bennett, Coalter W., Forrest Augustus, Beverly G., Lacey, Madison, Gabrielle, and Lily.
Mrs. Hollberg was an honor alumnae of Lesley College in Cambridge, Massachusetts and shared a lifelong love of the water, sailing, and the Chesapeake Bay with Herb, whom she met through sailing and racing on the Narragansett Bay. That love brought them to enjoy Fishing Bay and Broad Creek in Deltaville, Virginia, and Carter’s Creek and the Corrotoman in Lancaster County, Virginia after Herb’s retirement from Dupont.
Special thanks goes to “Pinky” Holmes, a special caregiver and friend, who was a “sister” in Jan’s later years, and also to the staff at Rappahannock Westminster Canterbury for their care. The family could not have asked for a better support team. Also, special thanks to Betsy Douglas, for her many visits and arrangements for travel for Jan from RWC, and Michelle Lybarger, for physical therapy.
Jan brought her smile to all occasions and had a remarkable sense of humor, which moved Norton Hurd of Deltaville, Va, to remark once, “How could anyone be that happy all the time?” Her sons will miss her homemade apple pies, cookies and bread, baked rockfish and crab newberg. More importantly, the family and the folks at RWC miss her warmth, joy and sense of humor. We think some folks in Deltaville will miss her Christmas cookies, too. She reminded us always that “Laughter is the Best Medicine”.
A memorial service will be scheduled later this year. Any donations or memorial gifts should be sent to the Irvington United Methodist Church, 26 King Carter Drive, Irvington, VA 22480, Middlesex Volunteer Rescue Squad, PO Box 98 Deltaville, VA 23043, or the RWC Foundation, which can be reached through foundation@rw-c.org. Faulkner Funeral Homes, Bristow-Faulkner Chapel, Saluda is assisting the family with arrangements.
