John Collamore

December 31, 1969 — July 6, 2012

John Howe Collamore, Jr, 89, ‘Pop’ of Deltaville, Virginia passed away as the evening sun set on the 6th of July 2012 following a short illness.

John was born in Barrington, RI on the 12th of March 1923 descending from a line of early colonial settlers and seafarers. He was the son of the late John H. and Laura (Bentley) Collamore. He was predeceased by his brothers, James, Richard and Jeremiah; sister, Hope Howard and is survived by his sister Elizabeth Gallagher.

John graduated from Barrington High School in 1941 and shortly thereafter enlisted in the Army Air Corp during World War II. He proudly served his country as a radio gunner aboard a Mitchell B-25 Bomber, flying 49 missions while stationed in Corsica, Italy. In 1944 he married and is survived by his high school sweetheart, Nancy (Janes) Collamore. He is survived also by his son John H. Collamore, III (Susie) of Deltaville,VA, daughter, M. Cheryl O’Brien (William) of Tustin,CA; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren, as well as his companion ‘Rastus’. Returning home after the war, ‘Pop’ worked as a draftsman for the G.W. Dahl Co.of Bristol, RI., later served as Vice President, General manager of Dart Union Co. in Providence and in 1973 joined his son, John III, as Vice President, shipwright of Hulls Unlimited-East in Deltaville,VA building fiberglass commercial vessels until retiring in 1998.

John was a member of Christ Church Parish, Saluda,VA., Past Master of Corinthian Masonic Lodge, Cranston, RI , Scout master, Troop 4 in Barrington: a consistent blood donor and Volunteer at Rappahannock General Hospital. A gentleman always, ‘Pop’ spent many enjoyable hours camping along the east coast and sailing his beloved 1928 Alden yawl, “Windermere”. The family has requested that a Celebration of his life be held at a later date. Donations in ‘Pop’s’ memory may be made to either the Lower Middlesex County Volunteer Rescue Squad, Deltaville, VA or to Wood Hudson Cancer Research Memorial Fund, 931 Isabella Street, Newport, Kentucky 41071.
