John A. Guy, Sr. (Pop) of Gwynn’s Island, Virginia died August 17, 2018 in the early morning hours with his family at his side. John was born on July 7, 1937 in Portsmouth, Virginia. He was preceded in death by his parents Ed and Mildred and his brother Joe. He is survived by his loving wife Merle, of almost 62 years; his sons, Ed (Stephanie), John, Jr. (Nancy) and Henry; his grandchildren, Trey (Candace), Chris (Kelsey) and Aaron; and great-grandchildren Madi Grace, Quaide, Charlotte, Caerwyn, Adaline, and Elsie. He is also survived by his sister-in-law Emma, brother-in-law Lynn (Susan) and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. John was an active member and deacon at Gwynn’s Island Baptist Church. He retired from the Newport News Fire Department in 1972 and later founded Gloucester Civil Process, where he worked until the time of his passing. He enjoyed his daily interactions with everyone he came in contact with. The family thanks the doctors, nurses and staff of Riverside-Walter Reed Hospital for their kind and loving care of Pop. A Service to celebrate John’s life will be held on Monday, August 20that Gwynn’s Island Baptist Church with visitation at 11:00 am and services to follow at 12 noon. There will be a reception in the church fellowship hall at the conclusion of the service. Interment will follow in Gwynn’s Island Cemetery.
