John Miller

December 31, 1969 — February 19, 2018

John D. (Jack) Miller, Jr. 68, passed away Monday, Feb. 19 after a long battle with cancer. Jack was a life long resident of Middlesex County and was proud that his lineage went back to the late 1600’s. He was a 1967 graduate of Middlesex High School and attended Rappahannock Community College and Averett University. He served four years with the United States Coast Guard. He was a member of Harmony Grove Baptist Church and Donovan Lodge #75. He medically retired in 2000 from St. Laurent Paper Co. Jack served on the Middlesex County School Board for four years and on the Middlesex County Board of Supervisors for the last 23 years. He was a past president of the Virginia Association of Counties, served as Region 2 Director for many years and served on numerous other committees. Jack was well known across the state for his quick wit and his ability to handle any political situation. He was honest to a fault, well respected by his peers and he never met a stranger. Once you met Jack you never forgot him. He endured failing health, a total artificial heart, a heart transplant and in the last three years an aggressive cancer that ultimately took his life. He fought these battles without complaint and with a positive attitude making each day count. He loved life and more importantly, he loved his family. His children and grandchildren were the joy of his life.

He is survived by his high school sweetheart and wife of fifty years, Mary Lou; daughter Connie Miller and her husband Daniel West; daughter Chris Gresham and her husband Scott Gresham; granddaughter Emma Gresham and grandson Matthew Gresham. He is also survived by his uncle Virgil Miller of Deltaville; and his brother-in-law David Lowman of White Stone.

A memorial service will be held at Harmony Grove Baptist Church, Topping, Va, Saturday morning at 11 a.m. with visitation one hour prior to the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made online to the VCU Pauley Heart Center or the VCU Massey Cancer Center. Donations may also be made to the Hartfield Vol. Fire Dept., PO Box 205, Hartfield, Va, 23071. Arrangements by Faulkner Funeral Homes, Bristow-Faulkner Chapel, Saluda.
