Karen “Kay” M. Norton passed away peacefully on August 25, 2021, surrounded by loving family and friends. She leaves to cherish her memory, her brother William E. Norton, Jr. (Marsha) and sister Shirley Norton; nieces Carolyn Schmalenberger (Ken), Christy Norton (Steve), Cindy English-Williams (Gill), Diane Lucas (Dexter), Jackie Sandefer-Gonsen (Luis) and nephew James Mears (Laurie), as well as 14 great and 15 great-great nieces and nephews and other relatives who mourn her passing. Also left to cherish her memory is lifelong friend, Sherry Gryder (Robyn). Kay was preceded in death by her beloved parents W. Edward and Cathleen S. Norton and a great-great nephew.
Kay was born in Richmond, VA, on February 17, 1948, and resided in Deltaville, VA, until she entered Madison College (now James Madison University) in Harrisonburg, VA, where she majored in Education. She received her Master’s in Education from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. Kay taught physical education in the Fairfax County School System for ten years before joining the Washington Post. She retired from the Washington Post in 2003, and left the DC area for Grandy, NC., where she pursued her passion for golf. Then, in 2018, she relocated to Hollywood, FL, where she could enjoy golfing year-round.
A memorial service will be held at Philippi Christian Church 17276 General Puller Hwy, Deltaville, VA 23043 on Saturday, August 28, 2021. Family will receive friends at 10:30 a.m service at 11:30 a.m. Out of an abundance of caution, and in keeping with Kay’s wishes, all attendees must wear a face mask. Interment will be private at Norris Cemetery.
