Lenore Todd

March 13, 1935 — August 2, 2017

Lenore Rowe Foster Todd of Gwynn's Island, Virginia, died on August 2, 2017. Known to friends and family as Pookie, Len, Grandma, or Nana, she was born on Gwynn's Island on March 13, 1935, to the late R. Otis Foster and Katherine Rowe Foster.

As a young adult, she studied and worked as a radiology technician while living in Charleston, S. C. There she met and married her husband, Winfred G. Todd on March 26, 1955. The family remained in Charleston for 14 additional years and developed friendships while there, that have lasted a lifetime.

In 1969, she returned with her family to Mathews County. Pookie was very active in the Mathews County community throughout her life. She enjoyed supporting local sport activities whenever her children, grandchildren, or other family and friends participated. She was a member of the Mathews County Volunteer Rescue Squad Auxiliary, the Gwynn's Island Civic League, Eastern Star, and Gwynn's Island Baptist Church. Sense of community was an important part of her life. With the death of her mother, Pookie and Winfred committed to the care of her father for more than 20 years, until his death in 2012. Her most trusted roles as wife, mother, grandmother, and friend were lifelong.

Len's career in Mathews included working at Martha Ann's House of Flowers and Ann's Diner. However, most of her working life was spent with the US Postal Service. She retired as Postmaster, after 20 years of service.

In addition to her parents, Pookie was preceded in death by daughter-in-law, Yvette Todd, grandson, Shane Todd; and brother-in-law, Dean Stacy. She is survived by: husband of 62 years, Winfred Todd; son, Mark Todd; son and daughter-in-law, Keith and Derone Todd; son and daughter-in-law, Kent and Carlinda Todd; son and daughter-in-law James and Ange Todd; grandchildren, Wayne Todd, Craig Todd, Kley Todd, Kayla Schaefer, Emily Todd, Declan Leavitt and MacKenzie Leavitt; great-grandchildren Ethan Schaefer and Shane Schaefer; and sister, Rochelle Stacy. There are also many other family members and friends that she considered as close family.

There will be a graveside service at the Gwynn's Island Cemetery on Saturday, August 5, at 2:00 pm. Following the service, friends and family are invited to share in a meal at the Gwynn's Island Baptist Church. At Pookie's request, donations may be made (in lieu of flowers) to the Gwynn's Island Civic League Cemetery Fund, c/o Jimmy Rowe, PO Box 5, Gwynn, VA 23066.
