Macey Willis White, Sr., 83 of Hartfield passed away Friday, March 11, 2016 from heart failure in Riverside Hospital in Gloucester. Macey was born on January 12, 1933 at home in Hartfield. Macey’s early life was spent on the farm helping his family make a living growing vegetables, grain, livestock and peaches. He graduated from Middlesex High School in 1951 and graduated from Virginia Polytechnic Institute in 1955 with a degree in agriculture. Macey worked hard all of his life and rose to the position of Chief Operations Officer for Southern States Grain Marketing. In retirement, Macey returned to the family farm in Hartfield and spent many years cultivating Christmas trees and “Macey’s Tree Farm” became a favorite holiday activity for many families on the Middle Peninsula. Macey was an athlete his whole life. He was an outstanding high school baseball player playing varsity baseball from 8th grade on. He was also the high school football quarterback and ran track. At VPI (now Virginia Tech) he played 4 years of varsity baseball and is still listed among the 100 best batting averages in school history and he also ran track. After college he played men’s fast pitch softball into his 40’s then learned to downhill ski and whitewater canoe. In retirement he played golf and bowled. Macey is survived by his wife Mary Jackson White originally from Deltaville and his three children, Marjorie Chilcoat of Baltimore, Mindy Deyarmin of Hartfield and Macey White Jr. of Hartfield. Macey Sr’s legacy includes 5 grandchildren, Bobby Brown, Nikos Iliadis, Chrissy Bevard, Tricia Chilcoat and Cody Deyarmin and 6 great-grandchildren, Alyssa Brown, Bryan Murphy, Cameron Murphy, Josh Warriner, Gabriella Bevard, and Leilani Rich. Macey is predeceased by his parents Wallace Jefferson White of Hartfield and Evelyn Maitland of Petersburg. Macey is also preceded in death by his brothers Wallace White, Russell White and Virgil White and by his sisters Virginia Cocke, Joan Tulloh and Juanita Fisher. Macey is survived by his sister Shirley Higdon. A memorial service is scheduled for 1pm Sunday, March 20th, at the Bristow-Faulkner Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Saluda. A reception will follow at the MSSC Clubhouse in Hartfield (1860 Twiggs Ferry Rd., Hartfield, VA 23071). In lieu of flowers Macey requested that donations be sent to the Gloucester-Mathews Humane Society (P.O. Box 385, Gloucester VA 23061).
