Martha Anne Hoyle Engard, 87, of Topping passed away peacefully on January 10, 2013. Martha was preceded in death by her parents, William Dewey Hoyle and Lorene Shives Hoyle, and husband of 55 years, James Branch “JB” Engard, Sr. She is survived by her son, James Branch “Jim” Engard, Jr. and his wife Karla, of Orlando, Fla.; and daughter, Louanne Engard Ambrose of Richmond; grandchildren, Elizabeth, Jimmy, Megan, Courtney and Bradford; step-grandchildren, Christopher, Michael and Mackenzie; and great-grandchildren, Dylan and Hayley. She was also blessed with many other family members and lifelong friends. Martha was born in Lincolnton, N.C., and was a 1946 graduate of Greensboro College. She moved to Richmond, was married in 1948, and taught art in the city of Richmond for several years. She continued her career at The Collegiate Schools where she taught studio art for more than 25 years. Upon retiring, she and JB moved to their home in Middlesex County on the Rappahannock River, and enjoyed waking up every morning to their beautiful view of the water. Martha was an avid bridge player, a communicant of Christ Church Parish where she served on the altar guild, and a volunteer with JB at Rappahannock General Hospital. Seasonal ticket holders for more than 30 years, Martha and JB were devoted lifelong Washington Redskins fans. Services were held Tuesday, January 15, at Christ Church Parish, Christchurch.
