KATONA, NADINE HAWKINS, born July 25, 1924, the oldest daughter of William and Ruth Hawkins, died November 11, 2022 at age 98. Nadine was born and raised in Solon, Ohio. She received her nursing degree from St. Luke’s Hospital School of Nursing in Cleveland, Ohio, and thereafter worked as a Registered Nurse in the Cleveland area. Nadine married Alex Katona on September 9, 1950 and soon thereafter they moved to the Niagara Falls, NY area where they raised their two sons. Nadine and Alex had enjoyed 57 wonderful years of marriage at Alex’s death. In 2007 Nadine moved to Tappahannock, VA to live nearer to family. Nadine worked in numerous civic and charitable activities throughout her life, especially those involving heath care, and was an active volunteer at Riverside Tappahannock Hospital into her early ‘90s. Nadine was a faithful Christian throughout her life, and was especially active at First Presbyterian Church, Lewiston, NY and Rappahannock Christian Church, Dunnsville, VA. Nadine was kind, gentle, caring, friendly, unpretentious, optimistic, straightforward, a loving wife and mother, a loyal friend, and happiest when she was serving others. She was preceded in death by her father, mother and husband. She is survived by her sister, Shirel H. Pitz; and her two sons, Dean A. Katona of Columbus, OH and his wife, Vanessa, and Scot A. Katona of Dunnsville, VA and his wife, Beth. Nadine also is survived by four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. The family is especially grateful for the loving care provided to Nadine by her caretakers, Arlene Byrd, Ella Brimmer, and Tammy Schools. A funeral service will be held Friday, November 18, 2022 at 11:00 a.m. at Rappahannock Christian Church, Dunnsville, VA.
