Oscar Marshall

December 31, 1969 — March 31, 2015

Oscar Vernon “Dinky” Marshall, 74, of Water View, Virginia departed this life on March 31, 2015 surrounded by family at his home after a courageous battle with cancer. Son of Roger and Pearl Marshall (Brooks), a native of Middlesex County, and a 1959 graduate of Middlesex High School, and a 1964 graduate of the Apprentice School. After graduation, he worked for Newport News Shipbuilding as a machinist. After leaving the shipyard, he went to work at Anheuser-Busch, Inc. where he retired, after a celebrated career, in 2007. Once retired, he returned to Middlesex County to work on the water with his beloved brothers. An avid golfer, and member of the Water View Hunt Club, he was known for his quick wit and his love of storytelling – especially stories of his siblings and growing up in Middlesex County. He was a proud father and grandfather and loved to talk about his grandchildren. He is survived by his wife, Judy, his sons Robert (Diane) of Carrollton; Christopher (Brandie) of Gloucester and Troy (Tonya) Sloan of Vail, Arizona. Daughters, Tammy, of Gloucester; Melissa, of Newport News; and Christy Gossett of Tulsa, Oklahoma. Son-in-law, Brian Stafford of Baltimore and 14 grandchildren: Jason, Katelynn, Nickolas, Brandon, Colin, Christen, Brittany, Brianna, Samuel, Ashley, Shaun, Amanda, Haylee and Brendan. He is also survived by his siblings, Elmo (Janet) of Church View; Christine Ware of Mattaponi; Earl (Nancy) of Church View; and Albert (Jean) of Church View. He is preceded in death by his parents, his brother Wilton, and his sisters Elfie Davis and Joyce (Carlson) Britt. Funeral services will be held at Hermitage Baptist Church (94 Wares Bridge Road) in Church View, Virginia on Thursday, April 2 at 11:00 am with burial to follow at Hermitage Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to services at the church.
