Paul B. Stimson

May 18, 1928 — June 26, 2024

Cobbs Creek, Virginia

Paul B. Stimson, 96, of Cobbs Creek, Virginia died on Wednesday, June 26, 2024 at Riverside Lifelong Health & Rehab Convalescent Center, Mathews, Virginia. He was born on May 18, 1928 in Philadelphia, PA to William B. and Florence Chester Stimson. He was educated at Episcopal Academy, Overbrook, PA and Kent School, Kent, CT. During the Korean War, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He learned at his own pace. He found his career in the academic world, first at Princeton University and at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute where he earned the title of Research Associate. His principal effort was in the field of instrumented, anchored deep-sea moorings, for which he designed the Stimson Anchor. He also designed much of the instrumentation and deck machinery.

In retirement he took to writing; 20 years of theological essays were compiled into a book, On Earth as in Heaven. The book proved to be indefinitely expandable, and it continued to grow until his death.

Modern Publication invited him to write for their most popular periodical Forward Day by Day. In a lighter vein he also compiled Paul’s Favorite Limericks.

In his later years, he followed the words of St. Francis, “Preach the Gospel at all times; when necessary, use words.” He hoped that the message would be conveyed through him.

He also felt that he had more fun than most sane people.

Paul is survived by his wife, Mary Ellen Stimson; three sons, David of Boothbay, ME, Mark and John, both of Fairfield, IA; and five grandchildren.

A funeral service will be announced at a later date. Faulkner Funeral Homes, Foster-Faulkner Chapel, Mathews, Virginia is assisting the family.
