Raymond Floyd Lumpkin, 98, was born in Newport News, Virginia, on December 18, 1922, and passed away at his residence in Accokeek, Maryland, on Thursday, July 15, 2021. He is preceded in death by his wife Lether Pearl Lumpkin. He is survived by his son Steve Lumpkin of Mobile AL and his stepson Roger Midgette.
Ray grew up during the Great Depression. He served in the Army in World War II as a machine gunner in the Philippines, and was at sea off the coast of Japan awaiting the invasion when the atomic bombs were dropped ending the war. Ray worked as a meat cutter and retired as a meat department manager. Ray and Lether moved to Accokeek, Maryland, and lived with his stepson from 1993 until his death.
A graveside service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 22, 2021 at Essex Cemetery, Tappahannock, VA.
