MATHEWS - Richard Leigh "Dick" Artman, 70, lost his valiant fight with cancer on July 8, 2013. He departed this life in the same manner in which he lived it, with strength, honor and courage. Dick was born in Newport News, Va., on March 17, 1943, to the late George B. Artman Jr., and Anne Holton Artman. Dick lived a life filled with adventure, romance and travel. At age 17 he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corp, attended aviation school and served three tours in South East Asia, including Vietnam. After 20 years of service to our country, Dick retired and spent the next decade as captain of a private sailboat "The Chesapeake." During this time he visited many of our country's most beautiful harbors and seaports. Since 1990 Dick has lived in Mathews County, Va., where he leaves behind many wonderful friends. Also left to cherish Dick's memory are his wife, Susan G. Gary, daughter, Laurie A. Artman, both of Newport News; brother, Michael A. Artman (Terri) of Yorktown, Va.; and sister, Frances A. Shelton (Carl) of Newport News; as well as three nieces and two nephews. Preceding him in death were his brothers, George B. Artman III and Robert B. Artman. In honor of Dick's wishes there will be no traditional service. He treasured everything about his life on earth, relishing all pleasures, great and small. His family and friends will always remember him with highest regard. Dick was an animal enthusiast. Expressions of sympathy may be made in the form of donations to your local SPCA or Humane Society.
