Simeon M. “Sam” Martello 78, of Wake, passed away Saturday, April 29, 2023 after a lengthy battle with cancer.
Sam was born Sept. 17, 1944 to Frank and Patricia in Derbyshire, England. Sam crossed the pond to New Jersey in 1953. A graduate of Gloucester Catholic High School, Sam served in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War.
Sam loved history, particularly British history. He was fond of recounting a bit of his own history when he broke the line as a “cheeky little school boy” and ran to the carriage of Queen Elizabeth II during her coronation parade. Sam was known for his mischievous sense of humor. Those who knew and loved him will remember that he ended every visit, meeting or phone call with “Good night, God bless you.”
Sam is survived by his wife of nearly 30 years, Maria Hedetniemi-Martello; his daughter, Jennifer (Richard) Dover; his sons, Scott A. Martello, Simeon C (Shannon) Martello, Mykel Hedetniemi; five grandchildren; and his mother, Patricia Martello.
A celebration of life gathering for family and friends is planned for July 1 in Maryland.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to DAV (Disabled American Veterans).
