Thomas G. Mangrum Sr., 93, passed away on Saturday, January 18, 2020 in Williamsburg, VA. He was born in Lewisburg, NC on August 11, 1926 to William Louis and Laura Mangrum. He graduated from high school in Newport News, VA, went on to Hampton University and also completed several noncredit courses at William & Mary College. Thomas was married to his wife Ruthie Cora Parker Mangrum for 62 years and had 2 children. They moved from Hampton to Mathews and lived there for 30 years.
Thomas served in the U.S. Army as a Master Sgt. from 1944 to 1946 and from 1950 to 1952 as Communication Chief in England, France and Germany. He served as Chairman of the Mathews County Board of Supervisors for 13 years and 10 years as a member of the Mathews County Planning Commission. Tom also served on the Board of the Regional Jail in Saluda, VA for 9 years.
Thomas is predeceased by his wife Ruthie; two brothers, Nathanial Mangrum and John Mangrum; one sister, Gloria Jean Mangrum. He is survived by a son, Thomas G. Mangrum Jr. of Henrico, VA; a daughter, Connie Mangrum of Atlanta, GA; three brothers, Morris C. Mangrum, Lee Mangrum, and Henry Mangrum; one sister Beatrice Artis; 8 grandchildren; and 7 great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends on Friday, January 31, 2020 from 5 to 7:00 p.m. at Faulkner Funeral Homes, Foster-Faulkner Chapel, 160 Main Street, Mathews, VA 23109. A Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, February 1, 2020 at 11:00 a.m. at the Church of the Visitation, 8462 General Puller Hwy, Topping, VA 23169 with entombment to follow at Windsor Gardens Cemetery and Mausoleum, Dutton, VA. Immediately following the entombment there will be a reception at Church of the Visitation. In keeping with Tom’s wishes please do not send flowers.
